The Andrei Stenin International Photo Contest is an annual contest for young photojournalists aged between 18 and 33 in Russia.
The prestigious Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest unveiled its 2023 winners at a ceremony held at Moscow's Rossiya Segodnya International Multimedia Press Center.

Russian journalist Alexei Orlov claimed the Grand Prix for his captivating black-and-white photo series titled 'Blaze' capturing poignant moments from Donetsk and Mariupol.
The single photo, Fireball, won the Top News category; the picture by Ayman Yaqoob, shows the Yemeni missile attack on Saudi Aramco's Jeddah base. In the My Planet sector, powerful images such as Dying Tradition and 'Demotanasia' conveyed stories from India's northern coast and the Spanish province of Galicia, respectively.
Russian photographers dominated the Sports category, with Edgar Breshchanov's Struggle to the Last Drop and Sergei Bobylev's Energy of Victories taking top honors for single photos and series, respectively.
The Portrait. Hero of Our Time category celebrated Imago by Vladislav Nekrasov and Inside View of Autism by Lucie Hodiesne Darras, showcasing a diverse array of photographic talent.
The Andrei Stenin contest, organized by Rossiya Segodnya and supported by the Russian Commission for UNESCO, aims to spotlight the work of young photojournalists and raise awareness of the challenges they face in today's world.
Dmitry Kiselev, General Director of the Rossiya Segodnya international media group, explained that the contest owes its origins to the tragic loss of a war correspondent in 2014. He emphasized the pivotal role of photojournalism in depicting the world's realities and the growing presence of war-related entries in the competition, mirroring global trends.

"Symbiosis", 2nd place, Giacomo D'Orlando (Italy). My Planet, series.

Sea turtles are among the worst affected by climate change. As sea levels rise and stronger storms erode their beach habitats, the rising temperatures can change ocean currents, potentially introducing sea turtles to new predators.

"Northern Sea Route", 3rd place, Vera Vakulova (Russia). My Planet, series.

Concluding the work at the polar station. The crew and expedition members on their way to the Mi-8 helicopter which will take them aboard a vessel. The Northern Sea Route stretches from the Kara Strait in the west to the Bering Strait in the east. The harsh ice conditions and severe Arctic climate are the main obstacles to navigation in the region. The Arctic summer is short, but during the warmer months, the Mikhail Somov, a legendary diesel-electric vessel, manages to make two voyages. The entire route, with all the drop-off points, is carefully thought-out.

"Imago", 1st place, Vladislav Nekrasov (Russia). Portrait, Hero of our Time, single photo.

In biology, imago is the last stage of an insect during its metamorphosis. In psychology, the concept was introduced by Carl Gustav Jung and denotes a subconscious mental archetype through which we see other people. This picture of a passer-by with an earflaps hat, face mask and wings reminds me of a tired archangel who lives next door.
