Kabul Erupts in Celebration as Afghanistan Defeats Pakistan in Cricket World Cup
Afghans went wild after the Afghanistan cricket team stunned Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup, arguably registering their biggest triumph on Monday.
The Afghanistan cricket team caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Cricket World Cup, beating their South Asian neighbors Pakistan at the Muthiah Annamalai Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai last night.
Ahead of the match, cricket experts, including the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, gave Afghanistan no chance against Pakistan.
However, the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side proved the pundits wrong, cruising to a comfortable eight-wicket triumph to register their first win in ODIs over the 1992 world champions.
Following Afghanistan's victory, wild celebrations broke out on the streets of Kabul, with Afghans rejoicing in their moment of glory.
While some danced their heart out on the roads,
others expressed their happiness with head flips at home.
In another video shared widely on X, even Taliban gunmen could be seen enjoying the Afghan side's win over Pakistan.
Afghan Team Delivers Perfect Show in Chennai
Interestingly, Afghanistan was clinical in all departments from start to finish.
After Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat first, the Afghan bowlers restricted their famed batting line-up to 282/7, with their spinners
creating all sorts of problems for the Pakistan batters.
With 283 needed to seal a memorable victory over Pakistan, the Afghan openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Ibrahim Zadran, gave their team a great start, stitching a 130-run partnership for the first wicket.
Though the two fell for 65 and 87, respectively, the momentum was in Afghanistan's favor, and Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi seized on that, taking their team home with unbeaten scores of 77 and 48.
After the win, veteran Afghanistan all-rounder described it as a big moment for the war-torn country.
"Big moment for the whole of Afghanistan. We have played eight games against Pakistan and won in a big event. It's a lovely moment," Nabi told the tournament's host broadcasters.
