Amid its deteriorating ties with India, Canada has accused China of running a misinformation campaign against senior government officials.
China hit back at Canada following Ottawa's allegations wherein the North American country's Foreign Minister Melanie Jolly claimed that Beijing allegedly was involved in circulating "deepfake" videos of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canadian MPs.
Rubbishing Canada's accusations, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Mao Ning, dubbed Jolly's statement as "misleading and misrepresentation of facts".

"The so-called statement by Canada's foreign ministry misrepresents facts and is very misleading, which makes trumped-up charges against China. We deplore and firmly oppose that (Canadian Foreign minister's statement)," she told reporters in Beijing.

The Chinese official held that it wasn't the first time Ottawa made "false accusations" against Beijing but never shared any substantial evidence.
"For some time, the Canadian side has falsely accused China of spreading disinformation against Canadian politicians on multiple occasions, but it has never come up with any solid evidence," Ning added.
Instead, she pointed fingers at Ottawa, stating that it was Canada that had been spreading "lies" about China.
"It is the Canadian side that has been producing and spreading disinformation. We urge the Canadian side to respect facts and truth, stop spreading China-related lies, and stop words and deeds that would poison the atmosphere of China-Canada relations and damage bilateral relations," she emphasized.
Interestingly, the back and forth between China and Canada come at a time, when the latter is witnessing a massive downturn in its relations with another Asian giant, India.

Trudeau Damages Ties With India

Ties between New Delhi and Ottawa are at their lowest ebb in decades after Trudeau accused "agents of the Indian government" of killing Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a charge firmly denied by India.
Subsequently, India suspended Visa operations at its consulates and High Commission in Canada.
In another move, Canada pulled out over 40 diplomats from New Delhi after India asked the Trudeau administration to bring parity about the presence of diplomats within the respective countries.
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar later underlined that the move was prompted by the interference of the Canadian diplomats in South Asian country's internal matters.
Like in China's case, Canada was yet to share creditable information that links India with Nijjar's murder.
