Pakistan Airlines Faces Shutdown After 300 Flight Cancellations
Pakistan's national carrier, which has been severely affected by the financial crisis, is on the verge of shutting down. The airline is experiencing a significant increase in flight cancellations, recent media reports indicate.
With more than 300 flights cancelled in the last 10 days due to fuel shortages and the financial crisis, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is "on the verge of shutting down", the country's Dawn daily quoted a PIA spokesman.
The PIA is witnessing one of the toughest phases in its history, "as Pakistan State Oil (PSO) has cut the fuel supply over unpaid dues".
Since mid-October, 322 flights, including 134 on international routes, have been cancelled due to a decrease in fuel supply, as reported in the report.
On Tuesday, 51 flights had to be cancelled, including 27 on domestic routes, the airline's spokesman said.
PIA, the national and foremost airline of Pakistan, operates under the direct authority of the Secretary to the Government of Pakistan for Aviation.
The large scale flight cancellations have distressed thousands of passengers.
Additionally, according to Dawn, the airline management has failed to communicate a tentative departure time to them, compelling them to search for available seats on alternative airlines.
