Boosting Africa's Outreach: India Holds Maritime Drills With Ghana
India is looking to become a major defense partner in Africa, and for that purpose, it is expanding its outreach there. As part of its latest engagement, the Indian Navy conducted joint drills with Ghana.
The Indian Navy on Wednesday said that it took part in a maritime exercise with Western African country Ghana.
As part of the drills with Ghana's Navy, the South Asian country's blue water force participated in navigational maneuvers and board, search, and
seizure operations amongst others.
"As part of her ongoing deployment to the Gulf of Guinea, INS Sumedha undertook Maritime Partnership Exercise MPX with Ghana Navy Ship GNS Garinga," the Indian Navy said in a statement.
"Earlier, during the visit to Tema, Ghana, the crew of INS Sumedha engaged in professional exchanges, cross-deck visits & sports fixtures with Ghana Navy with an aim to imbibe best practices," it added.
India has made continuous efforts to
strengthen its ties with African countries, especially defense relations with nations in the strategically located continent, in recent years.
For instance, nations like Nigeria, and Zambia have agreed to deepen defense ties with India and even proposed to co-produce military equipment in partnership with New Delhi.
Last month, Permanent Secretary of Zambia's Ministry of Defense Norman Chipakupaku visited Delhi and sought India's support in enhancing the Zambian armed forces' capabilities through modern weapons produced by the South Asian sovereign state.
"The Zambian Permanent Secretary extended his appreciation towards the advancement of Indian defense industries and looked forward to their support through high-quality and cost-effective equipment for the modernization of Zambian defense forces," the Indian Defense Ministry stated at the time.
