India and China have not only refused to follow the G7 sanctions against Russia, but have also significantly expanded their economic ties with Moscow since last year.
Not all countries in the world agree with the western sanctions against Russia since last year, Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar has told Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera during his recent official visit to Rome on 2-3 November.
"These sanctions in essence are levers that advanced economies have on the basis of mechanisms, powers and instruments built over many years. They use these levers when it suits them. And it's not that they go to the United Nations to seek its legitimacy: they do so when they think their interests are at stake,” Jaishankar told the Italian newspaper.
He was responding to a question on why no emerging economy, including India, has followed in the footstep of G7 to impose sanctions against Moscow.

“In fact, many parts of the world do not accept the concept of sanctions in the same way. It is as if the whole world agrees on sanctions. It is not quite so,” the top Indian diplomat stated.

The response comes against the backdrop of record trade volumes between New Delhi and Moscow, which hit $45 billion in 2022-23. Russia has also emerged as the top crude supplier of India this year, a trend analysts say would continue this year as well.
The G7 countries have imposed 11 rounds of sanctions against Russia, targeting sectors ranging from banking, finance to minerals among others.

Jaishankar Calls Out West’s Double Standards

The Indian foreign minister also accused the European countries of having “double standards” with respect to crisis or conflicts in other parts of the world.
"I think this topic focuses a lot on the attitude of Europe. Much comes from the fact that in the past, when there were problems in other parts of the world, European countries basically thought that it was not their turn to worry about it,” Jaishankar told the publication.
He noted that that European nations were only concerned about their own well-being and safety.
“Then when something happens in Europe, European countries want international expressions of solidarity. But many in the world thought that their interests should also be taken into account. Having said that, I think we have passed this stage,” Jaishankar stated.
