The Mitra Shakti exercises start on Thursday and seek to exchange best practices in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.
The joint exercises Mitra Shakti between the armed forces of India and Sri Lanka are scheduled to start on Thursday at the Foreign Training Node in Pune.
The objectives are reportedly to foster strong military ties between the two nations, improve communication and exchange the best practices in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency (CI-CT) operations. The exercise is scheduled to end on November 29 after 14 days.

As both armies support the UN Peacekeeping Forces stationed in unstable regions across the globe, "Mitra Shakti," which translates to "power of friendship," is carried out in accordance with the UN's mandate.

The previous edition of Mitra Shakti was conducted in Sri Lanka in October 2021. The seventh annual defense discussion took place in New Delhi in February, during which India and Sri Lanka reviewed their defense cooperation initiatives.

Indian Defense Secretary Giridhar Aramane and his Sri Lankan counterpart, General Kamal Gunaratne, decided to step up the level of complexity in their bilateral exercises and reaffirmed their commitment to maximizing the advantages of each other's skills and expertise.

According to an army officer, the UN mandate requires armies to have a high degree of cohesion and interoperability in order to carry out joint operations in the CI-CT domain.

Frequently, circumstances necessitate those operations be carried out in tandem with foreign contingents. Mitra Shakti exercises help soldiers understand each other's best practices in addition to boosting their confidence in carrying out cooperative operations and creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), the commander stated.

The Southern Command in Pune has been instrumental in the execution of bilateral and multilateral military exercises, which have made the Foreign Training Node at the military station in Aundh, Pune, a preferred venue.
