African Outreach: India Conducts Joint Maritime Drills with Madagascar
16:27 05.12.2023 (Updated: 18:00 05.12.2023) As India seeks to become a major exporter of military equipment to Africa, New Delhi is strengthening its ties with nations on the continent and deploying its naval vessels as part of its outreach.
The Indian Navy has deployed one of its most advanced warships, Sumedha, in Madagascar as part of its ongoing outreach programme in Africa.
"The visit is aimed at reinforcing Indian Navy's commitment to enhance maritime security, building bridges of friendship and strengthening maritime co-operation with Madagascar," the Indian Navy said on Tuesday.
The navies of the two countries are also undertaking a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX), where their personnel are carrying out maritime operations,
including tactical manoeuvres, communication drills, and flying operations.
"The visit aims to enhance interoperability towards capacity building between the two friendly navies in Indian Ocean Region in line with the Prime Minister's [Modi] vision of Security And Growth for All in Region (SAGAR)," the South Asian sovereign state's blue water force added.
Of late, India has sought close cooperation with
African countries, especially in the field of defense.
Among other nations where New Delhi has tried to cement
military relations are Mozambique, Namibia, and Mauritius in recent months.
