Researchers in the remote Himalayan region of Ladakh have created an innovative solution to overcome the challenges posed by the area's severe winters.
Known as the "Ladakh Green House," this cutting-edge technology enables the cultivation of vegetables all year round, in a region where the crop growing season typically only lasts for about five months.
This innovative technology is empowering the people of Ladakh to cultivate vegetables throughout the year in limited quantities, within controlled environments.
In a written reply to a parliamentarian's query, the Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, revealed that Ladakh has successfully built 1,875 state-of-the-art greenhouses.
Even in minus 30 degrees Celsius temperature, these remarkable structures, costing a total of INR 437 Million ($5.24 million), are allowing farmers to cultivate a wide array of winter vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, tomato, and an assortment of nutritious leafy greens.
Rai explained that the cropping season in Ladakh spans just five months from May to September and during this period, the local production of vegetables and fruits comes around 17,000 Metric Tons.
On an average, around 35,000 Metric Tons of vegetables and fruits are brought from outside to meet the requirements of the people of the Ladakh region.
But this new technology is ensuring agriculture in Ladakh thrives even in the harshest winter conditions throughout the year and has considerably brought down the need for bringing vegetables from outside, Rai said.
