The Defence Research Development Organisation has halted its missile testing programme for a few months to save olive ridley sea turtles in India's Odisha.
India's Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) has decided to halt missile testing on Odisha’s Wheeler Island from January to March next year to protect olive ridley sea turtles during their nesting season, reports said.
The decision was made to minimise disturbances caused by flashes of light and loud sounds during missile testing, which may distract them, media said.
According to reports, nearly half a million olive ridley turtles nested in the area this year.
The nesting site’s closeness to the island is among other reasons that led to the decision. With their shells and eggs used for various forms, turtles face major threats from hunting.
The decision by the authorities is part of a broader strategy that includes patrolling by the military and Coast Guard in order to prevent fishing boats from approaching the turtles.
