World’s Best Indian Whisky Fiercely Competes With International Brands
Global recognition, rising wealth and a wave of consumers experimenting with new brands while cooped up during COVID-19 have completely changed the whisky landscape in India.
Indri, the Indian single malt whisky crowned the best whisky in the world at the recent Whiskies of the World Awards 2023, is produced in a distillery near New Delhi.
India is reshaping the $33-billion spirits market with its single malt whiskies as the country comes of age as a whisky producer, not just a consumer.
According to data from IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, sales of Indian single malts increased 144 percent between 2021 and 2022, outpacing Scotch's 32 percent growth. Indian malt consumption is expected to rise at a rate of 13 percent annually until 2027, while Scotch is expected to grow at an annual rate of 8 percent.
Based on founder Siddhartha Sharma's statements, Indri's maker Piccadily Distilleries aims to expand its capacity by 66 percent to 20,000 litres (5,300 gallons) per day by 2025 in order to tap into markets outside of the 18 foreign markets that account for 30 percent of its sales.
Local Indian brands such as Indri, Amrut, and Radico Khaitan's (RADC.NS) Rampur compete with
well-known international brands like France's Pernod Ricard (PERP.PA) and Britain's Diageo (DGE.L) for shelf space.
In contrast to many Asian nations where beer accounts for the majority of alcohol sales, India is primarily a whisky-drinking country. Global recognition, rising wealth and a wave of consumers testing out new brands while cooped up during COVID-19 have upended India's whisky scene, according to analysts and industry executives.
