India-Russia cooperation could cover Arctic, space and many other issues, an associate fellow at a leading Indian think tank has told Sputnik.
Dr. Swasti Rao from the Center for Europe and Eurasia at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defense Studies and Analyzes explained: "External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar's visit [to Russia] showed where we want to take the relationship. One of the most important topics that comes to my mind is the Arctic. Russia can play a catalytic role in India's participation in the Arctic," she said, noting that countries need to expand ties in all areas, without making exceptions for the development of any one of them.
Jaishankar was in Russia from December 25 to 29. During his visit, he was received by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and also held negotiations with his counterpart Sergey Lavrov and Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov. He signed three documents related to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of pharmaceuticals and healthcare and a protocol on consultations of the Ministry of External Affairs.
"We should at least start negotiating a free trade agreement between India and the Eurasian Union. We should definitely cooperate a little more closely on the space program," the expert noted.
Earlier, Jaishankar said that India and the Eurasian Economic Union will begin negotiations on a free trade agreement in January.
India and the EAEU prepared a draft trade agreement in March 2020, but its consideration was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In January 2022, both sides presented the final terms of the planned trade agreement, but further negotiations and work on the trade agreement were complicated by the outbreak of conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The five countries of the Eurasian Economic Union include Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. Russia is not only the largest country in this group, its share of the group's trade with India was 98% in FY2023.
