Netflix has pulled the Nayanthara-starrer 'Annapoorani' from its platform after being criticised by Hindu groups for allegedly disrespecting Lord Ram and promoting 'love jihad'.The production house Zee Studios has apologised to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and announced that the film will be taken off the platform until all questionable content is edited out.The film portrays a Brahmin woman who challenges her orthodox family's beliefs and values in her quest to become the best cook in the country, specialising in non-vegetarian dishes.Several activists and right-wing organisations such as Hindu Sewa Parishad, Bajrang Dal, Hindu IT Cell and others filed a police complaint against actress Nayanthara, director Nilesh Krishnaa, producers Jatin Sethi and R Ravindran and Netflix India's content head Monika Shergill.Netizens took to social media to demand that offensive scenes and dialogues in the film be banned or edited.Some of these scenes include a temple priest's daughter, played by Nayanthara, praying in a 'hijab' before preparing biryani, a non-vegetarian dish.In another scene, Farhaan, the boyfriend of the character played by Nayanthara, brainwashes her into cutting meat and says that the Hindu gods Lord Ram and Sita also consumed non-vegetarian food during their exile.Several activists took to the streets to protest against the film.
