In response to a question about Taiwan's recent elections, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova clarified Russia's longstanding position on the Taiwan issue.
She referred to the Presidential Executive Order No 1072, dated September 15, 1992, and key documents governing Russia-China relations, especially Article 5 of the Russian-Chinese Treaty on Neighbourly Relations, Friendship, and Cooperation signed on July 16, 2001.

"The Russian side reaffirms that the principled stand on the Taiwan issue as expounded in the political documents signed and adopted by the heads of state of the two countries from 1992 to 2000 remain unchanged. The Russian side acknowledges that there is only one China, that the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. The Russian side opposes any form of Taiwan's independence," it reads.

She further emphasized that the relations between the two parties in the Taiwan Strait are considered an internal matter for China. Zakharova condemned attempts by some countries to use Taiwan's elections as a means to pressure Beijing and destabilize the region. She called such actions counterproductive and stated they should be condemned by the international community.
This statement comes in the wake of Taiwan's elections to choose what it refers to as its president and MPs. Russia's position aligns with its long-held view on the One-China policy.
