Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday hailed the economic growth of the country and said that 2023 was a historic year as India maintained its status as fastest-growing major economy despite global crisis.
Highlighting that the Indian economy grew about 7.5 per cent for two consecutive quarters Murmu said that government’s focus on bringing development to regions that were previously underserved.
Notably, the growth of the Indian economy during April-June and July-September quarters of financial year 2023-24 was 7.8 and 7.6 per cent respectively.
The President also stated that there has been a significant reduction in poverty, thanks to a continuation of policies from the past decade.

“In the last 10 years, electricity and road connectivity for the first time reached in thousands of tribal villages. Lakhs [hundreds of thousands] of tribal families have started getting clean water through pipelines,” Murmu stated.

She further said that under a special order, government is providing 4G internet connectivity to thousands of tribal-dominated villages.
Mentioning the growth in the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, the President said that in the fiscal year 2014-15, around 2000 EVs were sold in the country whereas by December 2023, the number had risen significantly to nearly 1.5 million.
She attributed the economic developments to the government's commitment to good governance and transparency, emphasising their role as the foundation of every system implemented over the past decade.
