India, Qatar Call for Peace as Israel Prepares for Rafah Ground Offensive
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has so far defied international warnings to halt plans for an offensive in Rafah, lying next to the Egyptian border.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
Qatar's Prime Minister and foreign minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani have called for "upholding peace and stability" in West Asia, amid
Israel going ahead with its plan to launch a ground offensive in the southern
Gaza city of
Rafah.
PM Modi arrived in Qatar on Thursday as part of his two-nation visit after
concluding an official trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on Thursday that he held wide-ranging talks, including on regional developments, with Al Thani in the evening.
The Indian statement said that both the dignitaries exchanged views on bolstering bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, energy, finance and technology during the meeting.
"(I) had a wonderful meeting with PM Al Thani. Our discussions revolved around ways to boost India-Qatar friendship," Modi said in a social media post.
A statement from Qatar's foreign ministry said that the leaders "discussed cooperation relations between the two friendly countries and ways to support and develop them, especially in the fields of energy, commerce and investment".
The Indian Prime Minister is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Thursday.
Modi's visit to Qatar was announced this week, hours after Doha
granted amnesty to eight Indian Navy veterans who were serving a jail term in the Gulf state on charges not yet made public by either of the governments.
