Widely regarded as the fastest missile on the planet, the BrahMos forms the mainstay of India's conventional missile arsenal.
The Indian Navy is set to get a big boost with the induction of over 200 BrahMos missiles, a Government of India source told Russian media on Thursday.
"The deal has been approved. The contract will be signed in early March," the source informed.
According to the official, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), the top body tasked to make decisions on matters related to India's national security, cleared the purchase of the missiles from BrahMos Aerospace on Wednesday.

The deal is estimated to be worth $2.3 billion (INR 19,000 Crore).

This development comes on the heels of the company's export director Pravin Pathak confirming that the extended-range versions of the BrahMos missiles achieved all their objectives during their recent trials.

Pathak, who was present at the World Defense Show in Saudi Arabia earlier this month, revealed that both the naval and air force variants of the BrahMos-ER successfully destroyed their targets at extended ranges.
"The Indian Ministry of Defense was very pleased with the results of the latest tests of sea- and air-based BrahMos missiles. We have fully confirmed the requirements that the military set for us, and we expect even larger orders," Pathak noted.
