Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stressed on Monday that India's investigation into the alleged involvement of a government official in the assassination plot targeting Khalistani extremist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun is driven by the nation's own security interests.
Responding to queries regarding US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti's remark characterizing such involvement as an "unacceptable red line," Jaishankar stated, "It is something we are investigating as we believe our own national security interests are involved in that investigation."
He further noted that the statements made by the US ambassador reflect his government's perspective, while reiterating that India is examining the information provided to them regarding the matter.

During an interview last week, Garcetti highlighted the significance of maintaining a "red line" in the context of the Pannun murder plot, stressing "no country", nor any "government employee" should be involved in an assassination of a foreign national.

"The position of my government is that in this particular case, there has been certain information provided to us which we are investigating," he remarked, spotlighting India's vested interest in its own security on this topic.

"So, as and when we have something to say on the investigation, we would be very glad to speak about it. At this point, beyond the fact that there is an investigation going on, we have nothing more to say," Jaishankar added.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun is recognized as a terrorist by India and is a citizen of both the United States and Canada.

Meanwhile, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun frequently issues terrorist threats aimed at India. In November, he declared that Air India operations would be prohibited, while in December, he made threats of an attack on the Indian Parliament.
