The Jammu and Kashmir police on Friday said an infiltration attempt took place in the Uri area along the Line of Control followed by a gun battle.
The Jammu and Kashmir police said an infiltration attempt took place on Friday in the mountainous Uri area near the Line of Control (LoC).
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for the Kashmir division Vidhi Kumar Birdi said two militants were killed in the ensuing gun battle, but only one body had been retrieved so far.
“Jammu and Kashmir Rifles has neutralised one to two militants and as per latest reports, the body of only one militant has been retrieved,” Birdi told reporters on Friday.
The police force believes that the suspected militants were of Pakistani origin.
Indian authorities say Kashmir, where a counter-insurgency operation has been underway since 1989, routinely sees infiltration attempts by foreign militants of Pakistani origin or locals who travelled to Pakistan to receive combat training.
A large number of infiltrations occur towards the end of winter season when the snow thaws.
The Himalayan region receives massive snowfall during winters, restricting movement of armed groups across the 740 km long LoC. Although the frontier is heavily guarded, it witnesses intermittent infiltration attempts.
“Infiltration occurs because of seasonal periodicity, but we cannot generalise. More ground reports will be issued only after the operation concludes," the senior police officer added.
The Indian army also issued a statement about the incident.
"An Infiltration bid on LoC has been foiled by alert troops in the morning hours today, when terrorists were trying to infiltrate through Sabura Nala, Uri Sector," the army said.
