Jammu and Kashmir region is witnessing a spike in violence ahead of the country's August 15 Independence Day celebration. Eight people have been killed in the last week -- five militants and three Indian army men
The Indian Army on Monday said its soldiers had killed two militants trying to infiltrate the Jammu and Kashmir region.
The infiltration attempt was the second incident to be reported along the Line of Control (LoC) in the last two days and comes ahead of Indian Independence Day, commemorated on August 15.
On Sunday, the Indian army killed one infiltrator in the Kupwara region of Kashmir valley.
The infiltration attempts coupled with gun battles in various parts of the Kashmir region have prompted stringent security measures to prevent violent incidents before or on August 15.
Militants have attempted to launch attacks on security installations around Independence and Republic Day which India marks in Kashmir by holding official functions and celebrations.
Two separate gun battles broke out between Indian troopers and suspected militants in the Poonch-Rajouri sector of the Jammu region.
The violence in Jammu came following a major gun battle in the Kulgam region of Kashmir valley, where militants gunned down three Indian army personnel.
Later, the Indian army launched an operation in the Pir Panjal Mountain range, that straddles across the LoC, to track attackers involved in the killing of three soldiers.
The search operation, which entered its third day on Monday, was carried out in areas with difficult terrain and thick forest cover, army officials said in a statement.

“Two infiltrating terrorists were engaged by the joint teams of the Indian Army and the JKP. One terrorist fell immediately. The second terrorist tried to run back to the LoC but was engaged and hit. He was seen falling down,” said Indian Army Jammu-based spokesman Lt. Col. Suneel Bartwal.

Historically the anti-India militancy that erupted across Jammu and Kashmir in the late 1980s was focused in the Kashmir region as violence in Jammu remained under control.
However militant activities in the Jammu region have been witnessing an increase for more than a year.
In April and May this year, two major militant attacks took place in the Jammu region in which ten soldiers, including special commandos of the Indian army, were killed.
The attacks were believed to be carried out by the militant group People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF). The group also took responsibility for the killing of three Indian soldiers on Saturday.
In January this year, seven civilians were killed by militants in the Rajouri area as well.
