Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has claimed that Indian government "agents" were possibly involved in the killing of pro-Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, a new report suggests that he was killed as a result of inter-gang rivalry.
Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar has reacted to the arrest of three Indian nationals allegedly linked to the killing of pro-Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada last June.
“Okay, somebody may have been arrested. Their police may have done some investigation. But the fact is that number of gangland people, a number of people with organised crime links from Punjab have been made welcome in Canada,” Jaishankar said during a press interaction in Bhubaneswar on Saturday evening.
Jaishankar said that New Delhi has warned Canada repeatedly about the dangers of allowing criminals into their country.
“If you decide to import for political purposes, people with very dubious, actually very negative background, then there will be issues. In some cases, they have created problems in their own countries, as a result of their own politics,” the top Indian diplomat stated.
The arrests were made by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on Friday. A report in Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) claimed that the arrested individuals were linked to jailed Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, possibly indicating that Nijjar was killed due to inter-gang rivalry.
The three individuals entered Canada on a student visa, according to police investigation.

Khalistan Extremism in Canada is a Big Problem: Jaishankar

Jaishankar described pro-Khalistan activism in Canada as a big problem for India.
"At this time, it’s not so much a problem in the US. Our biggest problem right now is in Canada. Because in Canada, actually, today the party in power in Canada, the other parties have given these kind of extremism, separatism, advocates of violence certain legitimacy in the name of free speech," stated Jaishankar.
He said that pro-Khalistan extremists have made Canadian politicians to believe that would get the entire community to rally behind them.
"The politicians of those countries are made to believe that if they defer to these people, pander to these people, these people have the ability to get the community to support them," Jaishankar remarked.
The Indian minister said that he was "deeply concerned" by attacks and threats against Indian diplomatic missions, diplomats and Indian interests in Canada.

"And I tell the foreign minister (of Canada), imagine it happened to you, your diplomats, your embassy, your flag, how would you react? So, we have to keep our position strong," he said.
