Indian Army Receives First Batch of Russian-Licensed T-90 Mk-III Main Battle Tanks
India and Russia share a long-standing partnership in defenсe manufacturing, including collaborations for the production of missiles, rifles, and tanks.
The Indian Army has received the first consignment of 10 T-90 Mk-III main battle tanks (MBTs) from the state-owned Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), military publication Janes reported on Thursday.
"The tanks are newly produced by AVNL's Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) under [a] licensing agreement with Russia," an AVNL official stated.
The contract for delivering 464 new T-90 Mk-III tanks to the Indian Army was inked with HVF in 2019 and the delivery of 10 T-90 Mk-III MBTs is following
of that deal.
Meanwhile, HVF said that it had rolled out the first set of T-90 Mk-III tanks, marking a significant milestone in its endeavor to hand over modernized military equipment to the Indian Armed Forces.
"This event will remain as notable landmark on part of HVF's manufacturing journey & India's defence sector as well. Further, it will definitely strengthen Atmanirbhar Bharat," HVF said in a statement in May.
Among the key features of the T-90 Mk-III MBTs are a best-in-line automatic target tracking system, indigenously developed sighting systems, and a state-of-the-art digital ballistic computer, which can survive powerful explosions from the enemy.
Besides, the T-90 Mk-III tanks are equipped with a first-of-its-kind mid-wave infrared (MWIR)-based commander sight that was developed by India's premier Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
As per the Indian
Ministry of Defence (MoD), the mid-wave infrared (MWIR)-based commander sight helps these tanks to detect targets at ranges of up to 8 km during the daytime
with the help of a thermal imager. On the other hand, at night, these MBTs could track targets within a radius of 5 km with the assistance of a
laser rangefinder (LRF).
"With the corrections from ballistic software and LRF, the commander of T-90 can detect, engage, and neutralize the targets with accuracy," the MoD explained.
