India has been ramping up its domestic military production capabilities, including indigenous manufacturing of tanks, rifles, artillery shells, missiles, etc.
India's Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) unveiled the country's light battle tank Zorawar in a big boost to the Indian Army's mountain warfare capabilities on Saturday.
Zorawar has been co-developed by DRDO and the South Asian sovereign state's private sector defense behemoth Larsen and Toubro.
"It's indeed a momentous day for all of us to see the light tank in action. It makes me happy and proud. It's indeed an example... in a short period of two years to two and a half years, we have not only designed this tank but made a first prototype and now the first prototype will undergo development trials over the next six months, and then we will be ready to offer it to our users for user trials," DRDO chief Dr Samir V Kamath said following the unveiling ceremony of the tank in Gujarat's Hazira.

Kamath added that the Zorawar tank is set to be inducted into the Indian Army in 2027.

The tank will fulfill the Indian Army's much-needed requirement to have a light battle tank for deployment in its northern Himalayan region, including Kashmir and Ladakh.
The tank is known for its maneuverability and due to its lightweight can move around quickly at steep heights on the hills.
In addition to that, it can cross water bodies far more easier than other tanks like the T-72 and T-90 in the Indian Army's arsenal.
