INS Arighat Joins Indian Navy as Second Nuclear-Powered Submarine
INS Arighat, expected to be armed with K-15 ballistic missiles with a 750-kilometre range, has been in development and testing at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam since its initial launch in 2017.
India's second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Arighat, was officially commissioned into the Navy on Thursday at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
During the ceremony Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his confidence that the submarine "would bolster India's nuclear triad, enhance nuclear deterrence, help in establishing strategic balance & peace in the region, and play a decisive role in the security of the country," according to the press release by Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The minister praised the Indian Navy, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the defence and shipbuilding industries for their teamwork in achieving the milestone, which he called a key to self-reliance and a boost to the industrial sector and job creation.
"Today, India is surging ahead to become a developed country," Singh said. "It is essential for us to develop rapidly in every field, including defence, especially in today's geopolitical scenario."
The commissioning of
INS Arighat, the second ballistic missile sub in the fleet, represents a key achievement in the country's
nuclear submarine programme. The sub's indigenous technological upgrades make it more advanced than its predecessor, Arihant, and both submarines will enhance India’s capability to deter potential adversaries and safeguard its national interests, the report added.
Moreover, arriving amidst escalating regional tensions and geopolitical uncertainties, the new addition to the fleet significantly bolsters India's nuclear triad of land, air and sea-based deterrent capabilities as part of India's ongoing efforts to bolster its nuclear triad.
"Along with economic prosperity, we need a strong military. Our government is working on mission mode to ensure that our soldiers possess top-quality weapons and platforms made on Indian soil," Singh added.
INS Arighat is expected to be equipped with K-15 ballistic missiles, which have a 750-kilometre range, thereby enhancing the
Indian Navy's offfensive capabilities. The submarine can achieve speeds of 12–15 knots (22–28 km/h) on the surface and up to 24 knots (44 km/h) submerged.
