Settlement in Ukraine Shouldn't Be Discussed Without Russia's Presence: Jaishankar
Negotiations on the conflict in Ukraine should be spearheaded by the parties to the conflict -- Russia cannot not be presented with a pre-determined position formulated by third parties, Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Tuesday.
India's top diplomat, who was speaking at a panel discussion hosted by the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin, noted: "I mean, in this case, Russia and Ukraine, have to be at that negotiation, that it cannot be that [third parties are taking a certain] position and then going to Russia and saying, 'okay, this is our collective position.' And maybe that could be one facet of it, but eventually there has to be a negotiation."
Jaishankar reiterated India's stance that the conflict could only be
resolved through negotiations.
"We do not think that this conflict will be resolved on the battlefield. At some stage there will be some negotiations," Jaishankar stressed.
In late August, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation, during which the Indian leader briefed the latter on his visit to Ukraine and meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, noting India's interest in contributing to a possible settlement of the situation.
