DOHA (Sputnik) - Yemeni movement Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthis, has shot down a US MQ-9 reconnaissance drone over Dhamar Governorate, a Yemeni source told Sputnik on Thursday.
"Yemeni movement Ansar Allah shot down a US MQ-9 reconnaissance drone in the Mabar district of Dhamar Governorate, south of Sanaa," the source said.
Over the weekend, the US mounted dozens of strikes targeting Yemen's northern and central regions under Houthi control, including the capital of Sanaa. The strikes killed more than 50 people and injured almost 100, according to the Houthis. The Shia movement retaliated by attacking US aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman and other warships in the Red Sea with missiles and drones.
Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between government forces and the Houthi rebels since 2014. The situation exacerbated in March 2015, when the Saudi-led Arab alliance, working in cooperation with the internationally-recognized Yemeni government, began conducting air, land and sea operations against the Houthis.
On January 22, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order reinstating the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, a designation rescinded by ex-President Joe Biden in 2021.
