BEIJING (Sputnik) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Sputnik that he is convinced that brave Russian people will be able to overcome all difficulties and challenges that they face.
In the interview, Wang said that Russians are a strong nation that is able to consolidate "powerful patriotic forces" at critical moments.
"I am convinced that 80 years later [after the World War II], under the leadership of President Vladimir Putin, the unyielding and courageous Russian people will overcome all difficulties and challenges, and will make more confident steps and bright achievements on the way to state development and national revival," Wang told Sputnik, a part of the Rossiya Segodnya international media group.
He underscored that unbreakable friendship between Russia and China began with joint resistance to fascism and militarism in World War II.
"As the main theaters of military operations in Asia and Europe, in the brutal war between good and evil, China and Russia were the main forces in the joint fight against fascism and militarism. Without giving in to violence, and fighting in bloody battles, our peoples, at the cost of colossal sacrifices and hardships, stopped and destroyed the aggressors, defended the sovereignty and dignity of the country, made a significant historical contribution to the victory in the world anti-fascist war. Our countries laid the bonds of unbreakable friendship in joint resistance in World War II, which served as a powerful impetus for the comprehensive development of bilateral relations," Wang Yi stated.
The Chinese top diplomat recalled that the current year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese people in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the victory in the Great Patriotic War and the world anti-fascist war.
He also stated the need to resist any attempts to distort or falsify history and preserve the truth about World War II.

Wang Yi further noted that China "always maintains the lowest level of nuclear arsenal, necessary to maintain national security."

"China's nuclear forces and policy serve as an important contribution to world peace," Wang stated.
Regarding the increase in US tariffs on goods from China, Wang Yi said that it is groundless and damages global markets and US reputation.
The United States has imposed 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada and increased tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%. US has justified the measures as a means to combat illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking.
"This will not help solve the problems at hand, and it will do serious damage not only to the global market and trade order, but also to the reputation of the states themselves. America First cannot be achieved through American bullying, especially at the expense of other countries. A double increase in tariffs against China on the pretext of fentanyl has no justification," Wang Yi underscored.
The US is trying to absolve itself of responsibility for problems by imposing tariffs on goods from China, the minister said, adding that if Washington does not stop putting economic pressure on China, Beijing will respond in the strongest possible way.
