JAKARTA (Sputnik) - A huge fire that erupted at a gas pipeline in Putra Heights, in Malaysia, on Tuesday has left 112 people injured, the Malay Mail news website reported, citing local police.
The police said that 63 people had been taken to hospitals. The deputy police chief of the Selangor state, Mohd Zaini Abu Hassan, said that 47 houses were affected by the fire.
"A total of 49 people are currently at the Sri Maha Kaliamman Temple, which has been designated as a medical base," Hassan was quoted as saying by Malay Mail.
The fire was reportedly caused by a gas leak at the pipeline, which is 500 meters long.
National energy company Petronas confirmed that a fire engulfed the main PETRONAS Gas Berhad (PGB) pipeline at 8:10 am local time (00:10 GMT).
"The affected pipeline has been isolated, and all relevant stakeholders have been informed. PETRONAS is working closely with all relevant parties to ensure the safety of the surrounding community, environment and security of gas supply to the nation, which remain our utmost priority," the company said in a statement.
The company's nearby retail stations — PS Putra Heights, PS KM2 LDP and PS Putra Bestari — are not affected but have been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.
