The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), along with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is likely to thrive in the current trade tariff situation, where many countries feel pressured and alienated, former Ambassador asserted.
Countries affected by Trump's tariffs may collaborate and develop a joint understanding to increase mutual trade, offsetting the impact of tariffs. Pakistan’s major exports to the US include cotton, apparel, and leather products, former Ambassador, Dr. Major General Raza Muhammad told Sputnik India.
In the context of Trump's tariffs, its main competitors are China (125%), India (26%), Bangladesh (37%), Vietnam (46%), and Sri Lanka (44%). The diplomat stated that Pakistan has established a business and expert group to analyze the impacts, formulate proposals, negotiate with the US, and quickly fill the resulting gap by increasing production of the required goods.

"The US dollar may also face challenges. However, for the BRI to fully optimise its benefits, peace and stability in Afghanistan are essential prerequisites," Dr. Major General Raza Muhammad (Retd) said.

In a conversation with Khalid Taimur Akram, Executive Director of the Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future (PRCCSF) and an expert author on China, Pakistan, and Central Asia, he told Sputnik India that the US-China trade war—fueled by escalating U.S tariffs—has unexpectedly encouraged China to develop strategic economic alliances through initiatives like the CPEC and the BRI.
Recent U.S. trade war escalations have further strengthened the BRI, particularly in Pakistan. Chinese engagement has grown as the US reduces its support for international development programs, and CPEC provides Pakistan with economic stability through infrastructure and industrial development, the pundit said.

"For instance, the Gwadar International Airport demonstrates China’s strong commitment to Pakistan’s economic progress, countering external efforts to undermine CPEC projects," Khalid Taimur Akram stated. "Such initiatives mitigate the economic damage caused by US tariffs and reinforce China’s leading role in shaping new global trade systems through economic partnerships."

By redirecting investments and supply chains to Pakistan, China adopts a strategic development approach that prioritises cooperation over protectionism. Through its steadfast commitment to CPEC, China proves itself a reliable partner, bolstering Pakistan’s economy and stability amid challenging global trade conditions, he summed up.
