India increased its coal purchases from Russia by a quarter year-on-year in January, according to data from the Indian statistical agency obtained by Sputnik.
Russian coal exports to India at the beginning of this year reached $339.1 million — the highest level since July 2024 — marking a 22% increase compared to the same period last year. In physical terms, coal deliveries to India rose by 40.4% to 2.5 million tonnes.
As a result, Russia maintained its position as the fourth-largest coal supplier to India. Australia remained the top exporter, although it reduced its deliveries by 28% year-on-year to $627 million. Indonesia ranked second, cutting its exports by 26% to $595 million, while South Africa increased its exports by 1.5 times to $414 million, securing third place.
In total, India imported $2.6 billion worth of coal in January, which is 15% less than the figure for the same month last year.
