TEHRAN (Sputnik) - The Russian Embassy in Iran said on Tuesday that the fire at the Shahid Rajaee port in the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas has been contained, crediting the efforts of Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) personnel.
On Saturday, a large blast occurred in the port in Bandar Abbas. The Iranian authorities attributed the explosion to negligence, which resulted in at least 70 deaths and over 1,200 injuries.
"The flames have now been brought under control, and the emergency has been downgraded from national to regional level. We are approaching the final stages and hope for a swift resolution without further complications," the embassy said on Telegram.
The diplomatic mission praised the EMERCOM team, which has been working nonstop since arriving from Russia.
"Our rescuers have once again demonstrated Russia's commitment to aiding its allies in times of crisis," the statement read.
Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said on Saturday that the explosion occurred at a warehouse containing chemicals. The blast shattered windows in a radius of many miles and was heard on Qeshm Island some 12 miles away. Media reported that the explosion had been caused by a fire in one of the fuel tanks.
