US Hopes India’s Response to Pahalgam Attack Will Not Lead to Broader Conflict - Vance
US Vice President JD Vance has said that he is concerned about the recent escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, expressing hope that India’s possible response to a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir will not lead to a broader regional conflict.
"Well, sure, I'm worried about any time you see a hot spot breaking out, especially between two nuclear powers. We've obviously been in close contact with our friends in India and Pakistan. Our hope here is that India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that doesn't lead to a broader regional conflict," Vance told Fox News on Thursday.
Washington also expects Pakistan to cooperate with India "to make sure that the terrorists sometimes operating in their territory are hunted down and dealt with," he added.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated following the terrorist attack near the town of Pahalgam in India's Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which killed 26 people, including one Nepalese citizen. The terrorist-linked Resistance Front insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attack.
India blamed the attack on Pakistan and followed up with reducing mutual diplomatic representation, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and closing the only functioning land border crossing between the two countries. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the army operational freedom to decide on the manner, targets and timing of a response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
Pakistan responded by suspending all trade with India and closing its airspace to Indian flights. Pakistan's National Security Committee said the country would regard any attempt by India to divert the flow of the Indus River as an act of war. Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif told RIA Novosti on Tuesday that Pakistan would reciprocate if India attacks.
