India and Ghana have agreed to deepen their cooperation in the exploration and extraction of critical minerals, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced during a press conference on Wednesday.
The announcement came during the first leg of Modi’s five-nation overseas tour—the longest of his premiership in the past decade.
“Indian companies will collaborate on the exploration and extraction of critical minerals,” Modi stated, emphasizing the growing importance of strategic resources in global supply chains. He also noted that bilateral trade between India and Ghana has surpassed $3 billion.
During talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, Modi said both leaders agreed to elevate India-Ghana relations to the level of a “Comprehensive Partnership.” As part of this enhanced engagement, they set a goal to double bilateral trade over the next five years.
The Indian prime minister further highlighted plans to expand cooperation beyond mineral development. Key areas identified include defense training, maritime security, defense supplies, and cybersecurity, alongside sectors such as renewable energy and agriculture.
Modi’s multi-nation tour will also include visits to Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. The visit underscores India’s renewed diplomatic outreach to key partners across Africa and Latin America, with a focus on strategic resources, economic ties, and South-South cooperation.
