US President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on imports from seven countries, including Sri Lanka, effective from August 1. The White House has shared letters sent by Trump to the leaders of these countries, outlining the new tariff rates.
The countries affected are Sri Lanka, Algeria, Iraq, Libya, the Philippines, Moldova, and Brunei. Notably, India has not been included in the current list of countries targeted by these tariffs.
According to the letters released on Wednesday, the US will impose a 30% tariff on imports from Sri Lanka, Iraq, Algeria, and Libya. Moldova and Brunei will face a 25% tariff, while the Philippines will be subject to a 20% import duty.
Trump’s decision follows a public statement made on July 7, where he confirmed that the higher tariffs previously announced would be delayed until August 1 to give time for the US to finalize several ongoing trade agreements.
In a related development, Trump has also issued a warning to Brazil, threatening a steep 50% tariff starting August 1. In a letter posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump accused Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of orchestrating a "witch hunt" against former President Jair Bolsonaro, a close ally of Trump.
Bolsonaro is currently facing legal proceedings over allegations that he attempted to orchestrate a coup against President Lula. In response to Trump's threat, Lula stated via a post on X (formerly Twitter):
"Brazil is a sovereign nation with independent institutions and will not accept any form of coercion. Any unilateral move to raise tariffs will be met with reciprocal economic measures under Brazilian law."
This latest round of tariffs is part of a broader strategy by Trump, who also sent letters to 14 other countries, including Japan, South Korea, and Serbia, outlining tariffs ranging from 25% to 40%.
As Trump eyes another term in office, these aggressive trade policies signal a return to his "America First" economic stance, which marked his previous tenure. The global reaction to these tariffs, particularly from affected developing countries, remains to be seen.
