There has been "no directive" from the Indian government asking refiners to stop purchasing Russian oil, government sources with knowledge of the matter have confirmed to Sputnik India. The clarification from the Indian side comes in the wake of a media report claiming on Friday that four state refiners — Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Mangalore Refinery Petrochemical Limited — have "stopped" buying Russian oil, with "penalty" threats from the US being one of the reasons.Reacting to these reports, US President Donald Trump said over the weekend that it was a "good step" if India had stopped buying oil from Russia.Meanwhile, amid US threats, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) defended India-Russia ties as "time-tested" and "stable" which stand on their own merit.

India Continues to Buy Oil from Russia: Govt Sources
India has refused to buckle under US pressure to stop buying Russian oil. The Indian side has previously said that India's decision to source crude from Russia has not only served India's national interest, but also helped stabilise the global crude prices.
There has been "no directive" from the Indian government asking refiners to stop purchasing Russian oil, government sources with knowledge of the matter have confirmed to Sputnik India.
"There has been no directive from the government asking the refiners to stop buying Russian oil. These decisions are based on commercial and other factors," sources stated.
The clarification from the Indian side comes in the wake of a media report claiming on Friday that four state refiners — Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Mangalore Refinery Petrochemical Limited — have "stopped" buying Russian oil,
with "penalty" threats from the US being one of the reasons.
Reacting to these reports, US President Donald Trump said over the weekend that it was a "good step" if India had stopped buying oil from Russia.
Meanwhile, amid US threats, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) defended India-Russia ties as "time-tested" and "stable" which stand on their own merit.
"As far as sourcing our energy requirements is concerned, you are well aware of our broad approach, meaning our overall approach and stance. We take decisions based on the price at which oil is available in the international market and depending on the global situation at that time," MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a weekly briefing in New Delhi on Friday.
