MOSCOW (Sputnik) - India demonstrates stability and commitment to healthy trade, honest and open relations with Russia, despite external pressure, Rossiya Segodnya Director General Dmitry Kiselev said on Thursday.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% trade tariff on India in response to the country's purchase of Russian oil, raising the total levy on the country to 50%.
"Relations with India are very important for Russia, for India, and for all mankind. And recent events have shown that India has a very firm position, a reasonable, balanced position regarding the US ultimatum. In other words, India has demonstrated stability, commitment to normal trade, honest, open relations, transparent ties with Russia, and transparency of its aspirations. And, in fact, this is a reflection of the relations between our peoples," Kiselev said at a press conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary festival of Indian Culture called India Day in Moscow.
Relations between Russia and India were much deeper than the personal relations of "anyone else," Kiselev said, adding that the India Day festival does not pertain to business or politics, but to the countries' cordial relations.
"Let us also evaluate the abilities and enthusiasm of the people who organize such celebrations, and from year to year. There is no business here, rather, it is such an Indian, I would even say, sacrifice, it is such an Indian attitude, it is an Indian open heart towards Russia and Russians. Moreover, in difficult years for Russia, when many are weighing and watching from the outside, ‘who will win’ in the global confrontation," Kiselev said.
The India Day festival celebrating Indian culture will be held in Moscow from August 15th to 18th at the Dream Island landscape park. The themes of this year's festival are the history of the preservation of Indian heritage in Russia and the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The organizer is the Indian Cultural and National Center SITA with the support of the Moscow Government, the Roscongress Foundation and the international media group Rossiya Segodnya.
