TEHRAN (Sputnik) - Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) may hold a new round of talks in the coming days, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday.
On August 12, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said following a meeting with IAEA Deputy Director General Massimo Aparo that Tehran and the IAEA had agreed to continue consultations on the Iranian nuclear issue.
"The purpose of the visit of IAEA Deputy Director General to Iran last week was to work out the format of cooperation between Iran and the agency after the Israeli and US attacks on Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities. This visit was made with the aim to develop plan of actions in such situations. Perhaps another round of negotiations between Iran and the IAEA will take place in the coming days," Baghaei told a briefing.
In early August, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that Tehran had made it clear that it was ready to resume technical consultations with the agency. He also said the IAEA insists on the return of its inspectors to Iranian nuclear sites as soon as possible.
On July 2, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a decree suspending Iran's cooperation with the IAEA. At the same time, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that channels for cooperation remained open.
Iran says that its cooperation with the IAEA is conditional on safeguards for its nuclear facilities and scientists. The suspension of cooperation is linked to Iran's criticism of the IAEA and Grossi for inaction amid US and Israeli strikes on nuclear facilities in Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz.
On June 13, Israel launched a military operation against Iran, targeting nuclear facilities, military commanders, prominent nuclear physicists and air bases after accusing the country of running a secret military nuclear program. Iran rejected the accusations. For 12 days, they exchanged strikes, which were joined by the US, which struck Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22. Tehran retaliated by attacking the US air base Al Udeid in Qatar and then announced it had no intention of further escalating the conflict. US President Donald Trump said on June 23 that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire to end "the 12-day war."
