Buddhism’s interaction with Artificial Intelligence and modern mechnologies will be discussed at the Third International Buddhist Forum, Head of the Central Spiritual Administration of Buddhists (CSAB) Geshe Yonten (Sergey Kirishov) said.
Geshe Yonten noted that the forum’s logo is designed in a modern digital style, as one of the main themes of the forum is the interaction between technology and Buddhism. “If you look below, under the lotus (on the forum's logo – ed.), you won’t see the usual roots we associate with a lotus, but instead something resembling 'neural networks.' This is a reference to the fact that technology is rapidly evolving in our time. The forum aims to discuss and understand how Buddhism can coexist with modern technology and humanity’s achievements,” said Geshe Yonten at a press conference.
He also noted that the forum will explore whether neural networks are a benefit or a drawback for spiritual practice, and what kind of value or harm they may bring.
Last year, Geshe Yonten encouraged the use of artificial intelligence, neural networks, and all other available digital tools to spread Buddhist teachings and traditional values.
The Third International Buddhist Forum will be held from September 25–28 in Russia’s Elista of Kalmykia Republic. The program includes over 50 events. Key topics will be focused on the preservation and development of the monastic institution, the future and practice of traditional medicine in Buddhist countries, and Buddhism’s role in developing tourism potential.
Various cultural events are also planned — a musical offering to the Three Jewels featuring a thousand musicians, the Lotus Cup martial arts festival, and the national cultural and sports celebration “Dzhangariada” are scheduled.
Invitations to the Third International Buddhist Forum in Elista have been sent to over 400 participants from more than 35 countries, including Sri Lanka, India, Mongolia, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, Cambodia, Myanmar, South Korea, Belarus, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Uganda, Brazil, Bhutan, Germany, and Spain.
