Both vessels belong to the Nilgiri-class frigates, each displacing 6,700 tonnes, and are designed to be stealthier and less visible on radar compared to their predecessors. Notably, INS Udaygiri is the 100th warship designed by the Navy’s own Warship Design Bureau, marking an important milestone in India’s indigenous shipbuilding program.According to the Ministry of Defence, a total of seven Nilgiri-class warships are to be built, with the first — INS Nilgiri — commissioned earlier on January 15. Each vessel costs around ₹4,000 crore, and the entire series is expected to be completed by next year. The frigates are armed with a powerful array of weapons:With a top speed of 32 knots (59 km/h), the ships can operate across distances ranging from 4,600 km to 10,200 km depending on speed. Each vessel can accommodate 226 officers and sailors.Currently, the Indian Navy operates 14 frigates — eight of the Talwar-class, three of the Shivalik-class, and three of the Nilgiri-class — all equipped with stealth technology and the BrahMos missile system. Indian Navy Inducts Two New Warships: Udaygiri and Himgiri
The Indian Navy received a significant boost on Monday with the commissioning of two new warships, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Visakhapatnam.
Both vessels belong to the Nilgiri-class frigates, each displacing 6,700 tonnes, and are designed to be stealthier and less visible on radar compared to their predecessors. Notably, INS Udaygiri is the 100th warship designed by the Navy’s own Warship Design Bureau, marking an important milestone in India’s indigenous shipbuilding program.
According to the Ministry of Defence, a total of seven Nilgiri-class warships are to be built, with the first — INS Nilgiri — commissioned earlier on January 15. Each vessel costs around ₹4,000 crore, and the entire series is expected to be completed by next year.
The frigates are armed with a powerful array of weapons:
8 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles capable of striking enemy warships or land targets at long range.
32 Barak surface-to-air missiles with a range of up to 100 km for aerial defense.
Varunastra torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets for underwater threats.
Naval guns and the capacity to deploy a shipborne helicopter.
With a top speed of 32 knots (59 km/h), the ships can operate across distances ranging from 4,600 km to 10,200 km depending on speed. Each vessel can accommodate 226 officers and sailors.
Currently, the Indian Navy operates 14 frigates — eight of the Talwar-class, three of the Shivalik-class, and three of the Nilgiri-class — all equipped with stealth technology and the BrahMos missile system. The Navy also fields 13 destroyers, further enhancing its maritime strength.
