"Their [the tariffs] imposition is viewed as a blow to confidence in the India–US partnership. If left unchecked, these could erode two decades of strategic convergence," Akbaruddin was quoted by Politico as saying. An unnamed White House official told the newspaper that they "don’t think this is necessarily the end of the relationship between the two countries."On Wednesday, an additional 25% tariff on imports from India imposed by US President Donald Trump came into effect, bringing the total tariff rate to 50% - one of the highest rates set by Washington. This decision is linked to India's alleged sharp increase in purchases of Russian oil - according to US authorities, its share of the country's imports grew from less than 1% to 42% after 2022, as well as the failure of trade negotiations, as five rounds ended without result, despite New Delhi's expectations that tariffs would be capped at 15%.India calls the US measures "unwarranted and unfair" but emphasizes its readiness for dialogue and further search for a compromise. Trade Minister Piyush Goyal previously stated that the country "maintains a positive outlook" in its relations with Washington and hopes for a future agreement. Indian authorities also point out that US criticism is selective, as similar purchases of Russian oil continue by China and the European Union.

India Views US Tariffs as 'More Than Trade Dispute' - Former Ambassador to UN
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - New Delhi perceives the recently imposed US tariffs on Indian imports as "more than a trade dispute", Syed Akbaruddin, India’s former ambassador to the United Nations, said.
"Their [the tariffs] imposition is viewed as a blow to confidence in the India–US partnership. If left unchecked, these could erode two decades of strategic convergence," Akbaruddin was quoted by Politico as saying.
An unnamed White House official told the newspaper that they "don’t think this is necessarily the end of the relationship between the two countries."
On Wednesday, an additional 25% tariff on imports from India imposed by US President Donald Trump came into effect, bringing the total tariff rate to 50% - one of the highest rates set by Washington.
