Work between Russia and the U.S. on the Ukraine issue should be conducted in a non-public format to achieve results, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.
Russia believes it is not useful to talk about the details of the Russia-US negotiations on Ukraine in isolation from the general context, Peskov added.
"We believe that the work should continue to be conducted in a non-public format. This is the only way to achieve results," Peskov said.
The contacts between Russia and the United States continue through known channels, he further stated.
"As for our contacts with the Americans, they continue through channels that are also well known," Peskov told reporters.
US President Donald Trump's mediation efforts in the Ukrainian settlement are important, Peskov added.
"We highly appreciate and also hope that the peacekeeping and mediation efforts on the part of the President of the United States will continue. We believe that these efforts are truly capable of helping to resolve this complex, long-standing conflict that was not provoked by us," Peskov emphasised.
Touching upon the possible contacts between Russia and Ukraine, Peskov underscored that the talks should be prepared at the highest level in order to be effective.
"Any other contacts [between Russia and Ukraine] at a high or top level, as we have repeatedly said, should be well prepared so that these contacts become effective," Peskov told reporters.
However, there are no exact dates for a new meeting of the Russian and Ukrainian negotiating groups yet, he pointed out.
"We cannot yet name the exact dates," Peskov told reporters, adding that the heads of the negotiating groups remain in contact.
The work at the level of the Russian and Ukrainian negotiating groups should be continued, the spokesman also said.
"The Russian side maintains its determination to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, preferably by peaceful political and diplomatic means. For this, reciprocity from Ukraine is certainly necessary," Peskov also said.
Security guarantees are one of the most important topics in the search for a settlement in Ukraine, and it is on the agenda for the contacts between the negotiating groups, the spokesman added.
Russia has a negative attitude towards discussions in Europe about the possible presence of European troops on Ukrainian territory, the spokesman also said, adding that the advancement of NATO military infrastructure and the infiltration of this military infrastructure into Ukraine is one of the root causes of the conflict situation.
