India is preparing to launch special programs aimed at supporting textile exports to 40 countries worldwide, including Russia, according to The Economic Times, which cited an official source.
The initiative comes in response to new U.S. trade tariffs that took effect on August 27, raising import duties on Indian goods to 50%. The programs are designed to help India expand its share of the global textile market by diversifying export destinations.
“A targeted approach will be applied in each of these 40 markets. India intends to position itself as a reliable supplier of high-quality textiles and fashionable apparel,” the source told the publication. The strategy will rely heavily on the country’s largest textile production clusters under the unified concept of “Brand India.”
Currently, India exports textiles to more than 200 countries. However, the 40 key markets—including Russia, European nations, Australia, the UAE, and Japan—import Indian textiles and apparel worth over $590 billion combined, playing a pivotal role in the sector’s diversification. India’s current share of the global textile trade stands at around 5–6%, which the government hopes to expand.
Mithileshwar Thakur, Secretary General of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), emphasized that India’s textile industry has been one of the hardest hit by the U.S. tariffs. “A 50% duty has effectively pushed Indian textiles out of the U.S. market. Expanding exports to 40 other countries will help us minimize the damage and diversify our markets,” he said.
On August 6, the U.S. imposed additional 25% tariffs on India, citing its purchases of Russian oil and petroleum products. With these measures, overall U.S. import duties on Indian goods reached 50% as of August 27. Former President Donald Trump had criticized India for its longstanding defense ties with Russia and for being, along with China, among the largest buyers of Russian energy. India’s Foreign Ministry rejected the criticism from Washington and Brussels, calling it unjustified.
