India is the largest buyer of seaborne crude from Russia, sourcing over a third of its energy requirements from the Eurasian state at present.
Russia supplied 1.7 million barrels of oil per day to India, a six percent jump from July, even after the US threatened New Delhi with tariffs, eventually imposing 50 percent levies on August 27, for its continued imports of Black Gold from Moscow, as per data from shipping tracking firm Kpler.
Notably, India's oil imports from Russia in July stood at 1.5 million barrels per day (mbd).
The rise in Russian oil imports is in sharp contrast with the US, which saw a 37 percent drop in its crude shipments on a month-on-month basis, supplying only 230,000 barrels per day (bpd) in August.
This came after India purchased 23 percent more oil from the US in July than in the previous month, taking the overall contribution of American crude to the South Asian nation's energy kitty to 8 percent from a mere 3 percent in June 2025.
The sharp drop in oil imports from the US comes amid an escalating feud between New Delhi and Washington, with the current American administration blaming the former for fueling Russia-Ukraine conflict.
President Donald Trump's trade advisor, Peter Navarro, has even dubbed it "Modi's war," referring to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
India, however, has slammed the US for double standards, highlighting that Washington and its European allies continue to import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Uranium, amongst others, from Russia.
"The EU in 2024 had a bilateral trade of euro 67.5 billion in goods with Russia. In addition, it had trade in services estimated at euro 17.2 billion in 2023. This is significantly more than India's total trade with Russia that year or subsequently. European imports of LNG in 2024, in fact, reached a record 16.5 million tonnes, surpassing the last record of 15.21 million tonnes in 2022," a statement from the country's Ministry of External Affairs said last month.
"Where the US is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilisers as well as chemicals. In this background, targeting India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," the statement added.
