Iran, along with China, Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus, has submitted a draft resolution at the 69th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference, calling for a ban on attacks against nuclear sites, said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei.
“To safeguard the integrity of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iran, together with China, Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus, has put forward a draft resolution ‘On the Prohibition of All Attacks and Threats of Attacks on Nuclear Facilities and Infrastructure Covered by the Agency’s Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement,’” he wrote on X.
Baghaei noted that the text affirms every country’s “inalienable right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes” and their “right to effective guarantees against any attack or threat of attack.”
On 9 September, Iran and the IAEA signed an agreement in Egypt to resume cooperation, which had been suspended after the June strikes by Israel and the United States. The IAEA’s failure to condemn those attacks drew criticism in Tehran. According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the new framework meets the requirements of both parties. However, it warned that if any hostile actions against Iran are repeated, all contact with the IAEA will be cut off.
