NATO is preparing a "landing force" in Ukraine's Odessa (also known as Odesa) Region to intimidate Transnistria, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said on Tuesday.
"NATO troops are being prepared for a landing in Ukraine's Odessa region to intimidate Transnistria," the SVR said in a statement.
NATO military units are currently concentrating in Romania near the Moldovan borders, the SVR added.
"According to information received by the SVR, Brussels-based European bureaucrats are determined to keep Moldova on track with their Russophobic policies. They plan to do this at any cost, including deploying troops and effectively occupying the country," the statement read.
The first group of military personnel from France and the United Kingdom has already arrived in Odessa, the statement also said, adding that the scenario of a NATO "landing" in Moldova could be implemented after the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country.
"Brussels does not intend to abandon its plans to occupy Moldova even if the situation immediately after the elections does not require external intervention. Troops are expected to be deployed somewhat later. To create a pretext, armed provocations against Transnistria and the Russian troops stationed in the region are envisaged," the statement read.
Western provocations to introduce forces into Moldova are possible during the elections to the Supreme Council of Transnistria on November 30 next year, the statement added.
