India's Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) kicked off his four-day visit to Sri Lanka with a meeting with the Sri Lankan Navy chief in Colombo on Monday.
Indian Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi held talks with Sri Lankan defence officials and tri-service chiefs on the first day of his visit on Monday, the Indian Navy Spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Tripathi met Major General KP Aruna Jayasekera, Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Defence, Defence Secretary Air Vice-Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (retired), Sri Lankan Navy Chief Vice-Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, the country's Air Force Commander Air Marshal VB Edirisinghe and Sri Lankan Army Commander Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo.
The focus of the talks was to expand defence collaboration and promote tri-service interoperability, the Indian readout said.
The main issues discussed between the Indian Navy Chief and Sri Lankan military officials were strengthening naval cooperation, bolstering maritime security as well as exploring avenues of joint training and operational synergy, it said.
It said that the engagements also reaffirmed New Delhi's commitment to bolster military-to-military ties, promote capacity-building and foster greater coordination in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
A Sri Lankan Navy press release on the meeting between Navy Chief Vice-Admiral Kanchana Banagoda and his Indian counterpart at the Navy Headquarters in Colombo affirmed that the focus of the talks was on expanding partnerships in the Indian Ocean Region by reinforcing the longstanding navy-to-navy ties.
They also discussed issues of mutual interest, the Sri Lankan statement said.
"The visit of the Indian Chief of Naval Staff also underscored the strengthening of naval cooperation, bolstering maritime security, and fostering collaborative efforts in support of regional stability," it noted.
Earlier, Admiral Tripathi was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour at the Sri Lanka Navy headquarters before the formal talks.
Tripathi also laid a wreath at the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) Memorial in Colombo on Monday, the Indian Navy Spokesperson said.
The Indian Navy said that the memorial reflected the "shared history" between the two countries and was a tribute to Indian peace-keeping soldiers who laid down their lives during the IPKF operations.
The wreath laying underscored India’s commitment to preserving peace, promoting regional harmony and strengthening the spirit of friendship with Sri Lanka and the wider Indian Ocean Region, it said.
