ANKARA, (Sputnik) - A telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump may spur the renewal of peace talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul, a Turkish diplomatic source told Sputnik.
On Thursday, Putin and Trump had one of their longest calls since early 2025. The leaders discussed the conflict in Ukraine, among other topics. After the call, Trump announced plans to meet with Putin in Budapest. Putin endorsed the idea, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov told reporters.
"Turkey, particularly Istanbul, appears to be a logical choice — a neutral and convenient venue, given 2022’s experience. The US president may leverage this initiative in talks with the Russian leader to bolster his 'peacemaker' image. Still, genuine negotiations on Ukraine depend on the political will of the conflicting parties. Nonetheless, such a phone exchange can revive diplomatic dialogue," the source said.
Turkey hopes to see talks on Ukraine resume in Istanbul but has yet to receive any positive signals, a Turkish diplomatic source told Sputnik on Tuesday.
The third round of negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations took place in Istanbul on July 23. The parties agreed to continue indefinite medical exchanges of seriously wounded and sick personnel. Russia also proposed that Ukraine form working groups on politics, humanitarian, and military issues, which would work online.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in August that Moscow was ready to discuss the political aspects of the peace process with Ukraine in any format. He said Russia had not yet received Ukraine's response to the proposal it made in Istanbul in 2022 to create three working groups to thrash out humanitarian, military and political issues. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin's invitation to come to Moscow for talks.
