President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that the US will start testing nuclear weapons in what is being termed a radical shift in America's policy concerning atomic systems.
With the world already divided into bitter rival camps amid rising geopolitical tensions in the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, American President Donald Trump's statement about restarting testing of his country's nuclear weapons will open the floodgates for a new nuclear arms race, experts have told Sputnik India.
Notably, Trump said that he has ordered the resumption of US nuclear testing "immediately"because other countries were executing similar programmes.

"The United States has more Nuclear Weapons than any other country. This was accomplished, including a complete update and renovation of existing weapons, during my First Term in office. Because of the tremendous destructive power, I hated to do it, but had no choice! Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within 5 years," he wrote in his post on X.

The American leader's announcement that Washington will begin testing nuclear weapons is a real concern, Gaurav Kumar, a Research Assistant at India's oldest military think tank, the United Service Institution of India (USI), told Sputnik India.
There's definitely an element of political messaging here rather than strategic, since no real testing yet, he suggested. With Russia testing new missiles and delivery systems, America's move seems aimed at just showing strength, the expert believes. At the same time, it's a reminder of how fragile arms control agreements have become, he added.
The risk is clear- if one nuclear state resumes testing, others may follow. This kind of escalation makes the world far less secure. Instead of pursuing true de-escalation and stability, Western leaders seem determined to keep provoking competition, ignoring calls for restraint and meaningful dialogue from Moscow, the think tanker underscored.

"It's exactly this cycle of Western brinkmanship that risks destroying decades of responsible security architecture and undermining genuine efforts towards peace," Kumar stressed.

Interestingly, Trump's announcement came almost immediately after the Kremlin touted its hypersonic and underwater nuclear capabilities. In this light, the US move feels less about genuine defence necessity and more about sending a message to adversaries, allies, and especially domestic audiences, he asserted.
Furthermore, it puts the world on edge: with both sides locked in rhetoric and rapid demonstrations of new technologies, diplomacy often takes a back seat, Kumar underscored. These cycles of action and reaction don't lead to greater security — they create more uncertainty, keep tensions simmering, and risk miscalculation in an already volatile landscape, the observer highlighted.
"More so, it's playing with fire. In the realm of nuclear politics, perception often matters as much as reality, and just the hint of escalation can put governments, militaries, and entire regions on edge," Kumar stressed.
This is not something that the world would like to hear, retired Commodore Seshadri Vasan told Sputnik India, adding that the nuclear landscape has remained relatively stable for decades — especially since the signing of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the shift to laboratory-based testing.
The world has lived with a fairly stable nuclear environment for decades, particularly after the signing of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and also the fact that all these atomic tests were confined to a laboratory, the military commentator explained.
"But any real test, which Trump seems to be contemplating, will have a devastating effect on the environment and would upend the delicate balance that is there today as far as the global nuclear standings are concerned," Vasan said in an interview with Sputnik India.
Nonetheless, this could be an American ploy or mind game in the aftermath of Russia's test of new nuclear weapons delivery systems - including the Burevestnik missile, which the Kremlin underscored is “invincible” to current and future defences and has near-unlimited range with an unpredictable flight path, Vasan stated. Another Russian military platform, the Poseidon, could go underwater to strike the coastal regions, the former Indian Navy officer summirised.
