India Reacts to US-Backed Ukraine Peace Plan
India has said that it backs "sincere and practical engagements" between the all the stakeholders to achieve a lasting solution to Ukraine conflict.
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said that it is "closely monitoring" the developments related to the US-backed peace plan for Ukraine.
"We have seen reports about the peace plan. This issue is still evolving, as you would have seen. There are meetings which are being held," MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a weekly briefing in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Jaiswal highlighted that
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has on
several occassions called for "earliest possible cessation of hostilities".
"As you are aware, our Prime Minister has in the past and on several occassions... he has said that this is not an era of war," the Indian foreign ministry spokesperson said.
"India has also advocated for sincere and practical engagements between the two parties and other key stakeholders through dialogue and diplomacy to find a lasting solution to the conflict," Jaiswal remarked.
He said that India was supportive of all efforts aimed at
"bringing lasting peace to the region".
"Peace efforts were also discussed when External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar visited Moscow (this month) and these were also discussed when he had a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart recently (last week)," Jaiswal noted.
In response to a question about the
upcoming visit of
President Vladimir Putin to Delhi for the
23rd India-Russia Annual Summit next month, Jaiswal said that both the countries were working on several issues that will form part of the outcome, which were being discussed by officials at present.
"As far as the dates are concerned, we will let you know about them in a few days time. Both sides are working very hard to strengthen ties," the MEA Spokesperson said.
After floating a 28-point peace plan last week, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Tuesday that the sides were getting "very close" to finalising a deal, with reports suggesting that the peace proposal had also been accepted by Ukraine barring "some minor details".
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow wanted the peace plan to adhere to the "spirit and letter" of the Anchorage Summit between President Putin and President Trump in August.
In a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump said that his plan to end the conflict had been "fine-tuned" and that he would be sending his special envoy Steven Witkoff to meet Russian officials and US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to meet with Ukrainian officials.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters on Wednesday that Witkoff was expected to travel to Moscow next week to meet Putin to discuss the "content" of the peace plan.
