India’s pledge to meet Afghanistan’s long-term medicine needs comes amid critical shortage of essential medicines in Afghanistan due to an import ban on Pakistani medicines amid border tensions,
India’s Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda held talks with Afghanistan’s Public Health Minister Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali in Delhi on Wednesday, India’s Health Ministry said late on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Nadda said that India was committed to continued healthcare cooperation and humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, with a particularly focus on the long-term supply of medicines to the country.
The duo also discussed ways to further bolster healthcare cooperation between India and Afghanistan.
The Indian Health Minister also handed over cancer medicines and vaccines to his Afghan counterpart, which the ministry said reflected India’s commitment to addressing the health needs of the Afghan people.
“A larger consignment of medicines, vaccines, and a 128-slice CT scanner is also being dispatched to Afghanistan,” the ministry said.
The announcement came as Afghanistan’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdul Ghani Baradar announced a complete ban on Pakistani medicine imports this month, sparking a critical shortage of essential drugs in the nation.
Separately, Jalali also held talks with India’s Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav on Wednesday, with a focus on enhancing collaboration in traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurveda, Unani, and Homeopathy, according to an Indian statement on Thursday morning.
The meeting also focussed on capacity-building, and exploring pathways for mutual cooperation in education, research, regulation, and healthcare delivery, it said.
“The interaction reaffirmed the shared commitment of India and Afghanistan to promote traditional medicines as an important pillar of holistic and people-centric healthcare,” the statement said.
Jalali is the third Afghan minister to visit Delhi since October, signifying the strengthening of ties across sectors. In October, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi held talks with Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar in Delhi, during which healthcare projects and India’s medical assistance to Afghan nationals was one of the priority areas of discussion.
Afghan Trade Minister Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi visited Delhi last month, holding talks with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal as well as Jaishankar among others.
